About us
A historic winery with over 200 years of heritage in Germany’s Mosel region, Dr. Loosen is a member of the VDP association of elite producers. The estate is home to ungrafted original vines aged over 130 years and ten Grosse Lage (Grand Cru) single vineyards, and has been consistently named among the World’s Top 50 Best Vineyards.
· Two Centuries of Family Winemaking Tradition
Founded around 1800, Dr. Loosen stands as a rare example of two centuries of family stewardship in the wine world. The estate’s most valuable asset lies in its 98% proportion of ungrafted old vines—a legacy preserved by the Mosel’s slate soils, which acted as a natural barrier against the phylloxera epidemic. The majority of these vines average 60 years of age, while those in the Grand Cru sites reach between 120 and 150 years. These living relics of terroir form the very foundation of Rieslings defined by profound complexity and exceptional ageing potential.
· A VDP Mainstay and Globally Acclaimed Riesling Reference
Dr. Loosen has etched its name into wine history through ten legendary Grand Cru sites—from the time-worn, blue-slate slopes of the Wehlener Sonnenuhr to the ancient slate terraces of the Ürziger Würzgarten. Ungrafted rootstock, much of it over 130 years old, delves deep into the unique terroirs along the Mosel. Guided by a near-textbook winemaking philosophy, the estate captures the essence of each vineyard in the glass: vibrant, agile Kabinett; multilayered Grosse Gewächs (GG) dry wines; and apex noble-sweet botrytis selections—together forming a complete benchmark for German Riesling.
· A German Estate Honored with Decanter, IWC, and Other Top International Accolades
Between 2001 and 2005, Ernst Loosen—a winemaker of both vision and craft—swept three of the industry’s most prestigious awards: Germany’s Gault & Millau “Winemaker of the Year,” Decanter’s “Man of the Year” (the only German to ever receive this lifetime achievement honor), and the IWC “International White Winemaker of the Year.” International wine authority Jancis Robinson observed: “With extraordinary insight, Ernst has enabled the world to rediscover the depth and elegance of German Riesling.” His pioneering low-intervention philosophy and precise terroir interpretation have not only elevated Dr. Loosen to the ranks of the world’s great estates but also catalyzed the modernization of the entire German Riesling industry—establishing him as a key force in global winemaking aesthetics and earning him the title of the “Savior of Riesling.”
