About us

The Lanius-Knab estate has been family-owned for 250 years. Since 1991, the business has constantly been raised and expanded by Jörg Lanius. In 1992, the establishment moved into an art nouveau villa with a two-floored vaulted cellar; step by step, more vineyards were bought. In that way, the business went from a sideline of a 2-hectare cultivation area to a full-time winery that cultivates 12 hectares of the steepest vinicultural area. Since 1995, we have been part of the VDP (the Association of German Prädikat Wine Estates, abbreviated VDP). Our wine grows in the VDP-classified vineyard locations Engehöller Bernstein and Engehöller Goldemund as well as the Oberweseler Oelsberg, locations which were already supreme-classified in the Prussian vineyard classification of 1801. Low yields, eco-minded cultivation and selective hand-picking are the recipe for maintaining natural uniqueness and authenticity. The grapes are handed gently into the wine cellar, with the most critical step being slow fermentation for its maturity.

Wine Estate

85 percent of our cultivation is Riesling, with 10 percent being Pinot Noir and the remaining 5 percent as Pinot Blanc, Pinot Gris, Müller-Thurgau and Dornfelder.

Our Rieslings are particularly expressive and mineral, providing winemaker Jörg Lanius with a solid foundation to produce exceptional wine consistently. With an area of 12 hectares, we focus on producing natural wines that make each location's peculiarities and the vintage come alive - from the dry Estate -Riesling to the sweet specialties Auslese and ice wine.

Riesling and Pinot Noir Estate are bottled wines from the Mitterhein wine area in Germany. Low yields, eco-minded cultivation and selective hand-picking are the recipe for maintaining natural uniqueness and authenticity. The grapes are handed gently into the wine cellar, with the most critical step being slow fermentation for its maturity. The outcome is authentic wines full of character with extraordinary durability!

2023 Lanius-Knab Riesling dry

The dry 2023 Lanius-Knab Riesling is appearing bright clear. The delicate flavor of red apples, peaches and yellow plums is only a teaser of its fruit variety and a delightful freshness. This wine is grown on the Engehoeller Goldemund. This location is situated in a side valley of the Rhine and is therefore about 1.5 km from the Rhine. Like all the side valleys on the central Rhine, which are used for wine growing, the slopes face south or south east, which gives the vines plenty of hours of sunshine. The grapes all grow on steep slopes, so that there is a great deal of handwork in the vines here.

2023 Lanius-Knab Rheinschiefer Riesling dry

“Rheinschiefer” means Rhine slate and this Riesling lives up to its name. It captivates with a mineral elegance. The fine scent of apricots is joining an almost salty minerality.

What do you think about when you hear the word Middle Rhine? Presumably you have the many castles in your head, which are so romantically framed by picturesque vineyards and rugged slate rocks. Opposite the Schönburg castle near Oberwesel lies the vineyard location Engehöller Bernstein in the side valley of the romantic Rhine. The wine is grown here in steep rows. The slate geologically dominates the ground. In such locations, mainly regional grape varieties are grown. The vines are rooted there quite deep and so absorb the minerality of the soil perfectly. The Rieslings from this location are unmistakable.

2023 Lanius-Knab Engehoeller Bernstein 1G Riesling dry

The dry Riesling Engehöller Bernstein is just delightful. Also, wine drinkers, who prefer less dry wines, will enjoy this Riesling. The fruity flavor of ripe apricots appears powerful with a strong slate minerality. The acidity typical for Riesling is well-integrated and refreshing.

Erste Lage is the designation for prime vineyards with outstanding character which provide optimal growing conditions and have been proven to produce consistently high-quality wines over a long period of time. The wines are of at least Spaetlese quality. The vines root quite deep in these vineyards. The soil of the Engehöller Bernstein is dominated by brown and grey slate and provides the minerality in this Riesling. The adept recognizes that by the elegance and the typical peach flavor of the wine.

Opposite the Schoenburg castle in a side valley of the Rhine the vineyard is facing south-east and the grapes are allowed to soak up the sun. The result is a Riesling, harvested slightly later in a riper condition with around 100° Oechsle. That develops the ripe flavors, which make the wine so harmonious.

2023 Lanius-Knab Oberweseler Oelsber GG Riesling dry

This young Riesling GG offers an amazing variety of fruit flavors evolving in the glass. The fragrance iridizes between notes of exotic and local fruits. It reminds grapefruit and orange as well as vineyard peach and apple. The juicy impression, a piquant opulence and a lively acidity structure give it a thrilling temperament on the palate. This is brought to perfection by an impressive length with a silky glaze.

The VDP.GROSSE LAGE designation is reserved for Germany’s best vineyards. The sites are clearly delineated parcel for parcel. A dry wine from a VDP.GROSSE LAGE is allowed to be named “Großes Gewächs”, short GG.

This GG wine descends from our best location, Oberweseler Oelsberg. On steep slopes with up to 75% incline the vines are growing right on the Rhine. The soil is marked by its intermingling of slate, loess clay and variegated sandstone. With a microclimate predestined to grow Riesling vines here develops a powerful wine with a pronounced sovereignty. The Riesling from the Oelsberg is marked by a great scent and an overwhelming character. It is less minerally rather smooth and abundant, with exotic fruit flavors and spicy notes foregrounded.

2006 Oberweseler Oelsberg GG Riesling dry

This matured Riesling GG from the 2006 vintage displays beautifully evolved fruit flavors and complex aromas. The fragrance reveals a harmonious blend of exotic and local fruit notes, evoking ripe grapefruit, orange, vineyard peach, and baked apple. With its aged profile, the wine exudes richer, more developed aromas, accompanied by nuances of honey and a hint of dried apricot.

2019 Engehöller Bernstein 1G Pinot Noir Barrique

Originated from the Erste Lage this red wine is representing itself proud and powerful. Intensive spicy notes are joining candied fruits, sugar candy and currants, this appears smooth and elegant – opulent flavor in a silken dress.

Pinot Noir is considered a very demanding grape variety and is therefore grown only in the most suitable vineyard site. Opposite the Schoenburg castle near Oberwesel lies the vineyard location Engehöller Bernstein in the side valley of the romantic Rhine. The wine is grown here in steep rows. The slate geologically dominates the ground. In our Burgundy locations there is also a clay overlay over the Hunsrueck schistose. This is clay, which has arisen from the middle terraces of the Rhine. This type of soil is very beneficial to the Burgundy wine. The result is an intense and full-bodied Pinot Noir. The grapes for this wine descend from 30-year-old vines – that means in the best age. In favor of the best possible quality, we reduce the yield with very complex handwork. After the hot summer of 2018 we gave the grapes for the Pinot noir more time to ripe on the vines. Without getting overripe the grapes evolved the potential for the intensive flavor. For the first time we harvested the Pinot noir later than the Riesling – even four weeks later than its smaller brother, the Oberweseler Pinot noir.
